The Author

Ev Skillman is happily married and has two wonderful sons in their mid-20’s. He has been a licensed attorney since 1990, and is certified by the California State Bar as a specialist in appellate law, handling a wide variety of cases and serving a wide variety of clients. In his work as an appellate attorney, he does more research and writing than anything else. He also did quite a bit of research and writing in law school as a member of law review (authoring an article entitled Non-Recognition of Taxable Gain in Corporate Reorganizations – Reassessing Legislative Policy) and as an extern with the California Court of Appeal in San Diego (authoring proposed opinions for the court).

Prior to law school, Ev worked as a journeyman lineman climbing poles for the Southern California Edison Company, and before that as an assistant manager at various restaurants, and at several other jobs. Just after law school, he sang in the tenor section of the Pacific Chorale, performing works by Mozart, Brahms, Mahler, Beethoven, Handel and many others. While in the Pacific Chorale, he was part of the performance and recording of Goldenthal’s Fire Water Paper: A Vietnam Oratorio. Back in the 1970’s, Ev was the lead singer in a rock band, performing songs by Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Aerosmith, just to name a few. Singing is a blast!

Ev’s research and writing experience also includes penning a book called California Adoption Law and Procedure, a treatise explaining the law governing the four major types of adoptions as well as the foster care system in California.  He has also written articles concerning the law governing expert witnesses and the federal Adoption Assistance and Child Welfare Act.

Ev is enjoying his time writing fiction.  He doesn’t call it a job.  It is a joy to write works such as The U.S.S. Environment:  Remnant.  He also has many other stories in the pipeline, so stay tuned!

The U.S.S Environment: Remnant

In The U.S.S. Environment:  Remnant, the newly inaugurated president learns in January 2061 that a recently discovered asteroid will strike Earth in December 2068 and cause mass extinction.  To save her adopted son, she sets in motion the political machinery needed to finance the construction of a ship that will take him and a small, diverse crew of young people on a 50-year journey to a habitable exoplanet.  But who will be selected?  And how?  And can the ship even be built during the upheaval of the tumultuous 2060’s?

A number of books and movies explore the subject of interstellar space travel, but all of them ignore the reality of the vast distances that must be covered and the fact that cryopreservation of humans, also known as cryonics, is pure pseudoscience.  They also ignore the need for oxygen, food and water, the epochs of time needed to travel the many light years separating star from star, and an on-board energy source for a crew that will travel trillions of miles away from the Sun.  To make such a trip possible, our voyagers would need a vehicle that is a self-contained, self-sustaining and self-powered “environment.”

The idea of interplanetary migration is very popular. Shows on PBS, the Science Channel and network television discuss interstellar travel often and the reasons why such voyages may become necessary. Also, in connection with a little-publicized project by a Dutch nonprofit entity (Mars One), 200,000 people submitted applications to become part of a four-person crew that would leave everything behind and travel to Mars in 2024 – one-way. Imagine the response if the project were being touted by the President of the United States.

Additionally, since The U.S.S. Environment: Remnant involves a competition between young people to become members of a very select group, readers of all ages and all walks of life will find themselves bonding with the characters as they experience grand success and catastrophic failure, in the context of the new trends and new technology of the 2060’s. Check it out for yourself!
